Voting has now closed for the 2009 legal awards. Once the votes are collated, the winners will be announced in the forthcoming May issue.

In unstable times, the importance of knowing who you can trust is stronger than ever. Even the largest and longest-established institutions can be vulnerable to nasty shocks, as the world has seen all too clearly over the past months.

Rather prophetically, in 2008, Jan Spiegel described the awards process as follows: Just as no man is an island, no company operates in complete isolation. Nobody is  immune to external forces. So what sets the organisations which have been recognised in The New Economy Legal Awards apart?

All award winners were judged according to the following criteria:

• Innovation and originality
• Project Management Ability
• Keeping ahead of the competition
• Market leadership and geographic spread
• Proof of development and continued progression
• High levels of transparency and good governance

According to The New Economy’s editor Jan Speigel, who chaired the panel overseeing the awards, “This was exciting to be a part of. Discussions were conducted at length here in our offices, via email and over the telephone with our contributors from around the world.

“The decisions were not always easy to make, but the process of making them was certainly rewarding – and not a little arduous. Ultimately though, the process has been hugely valuable for everybody involved.”
